What is Veterinary Ultrasound?

Ultrasound is a safe, painless, and non-invasive diagnostic tool. It uses sound waves to produce images of your pet’s internal organs in real time. We commonly use ultrasound to evaluate:
  • Abdominal organs like the liver, kidneys, bladder, and intestines
  • Reproductive status or pregnancy monitoring
  • Fluid accumulation or unexplained swelling
  • Masses, cysts, or tumors that need further evaluation
Because there’s no radiation involved, ultrasound is especially useful for pets who need ongoing monitoring or have conditions where safety is a top concern.

Why Might Your Pet Need Imaging?

Every pet is unique and so are the signs they show when something’s wrong. Our veterinarians may recommend imaging if your dog or cat is:
  • Vomiting or having chronic diarrhea
  • Showing signs of unexplained weight loss or fatigue
  • Drinking or urinating more than usual
  • Experiencing abdominal discomfort or bloating
  • Showing signs of heart disease or breathing issues
  • Recovering from an injury and needs internal evaluation
  • Pregnant and due for a wellness check
Often, imaging allows us to rule out serious issues, or catch something early before it becomes a bigger problem.

What to Expect During an Ultrasound Visit

We strive to make your pet’s imaging experience as stress-free as possible. Most ultrasound appointments do not require sedation. Your pet will lie comfortably while our trained staff gently glides a small probe over their skin.

Depending on the area being examined, a small patch of fur may need to be shaved for better contact. The procedure usually takes about 30 minutes, and you’ll be able to take your pet home the same day.

Once complete, our veterinarian will explain the results in simple words, so you can understand what’s happening and what steps to take next.
